We have something very exciting to share. On Tuesday 5th of December 2023, the Ironclad Sisterhood team were presented with a special commendation for the Macquarie-PHA Applied History Award. This award as outlined by the History Council of NSW “encourages historians to produce a creative work of applied history drawing on their research.” The award promotes historians, working individually or in a group that have utilised the value of public history.

We are so grateful for this recognition and we still cannot believe we have received this. The Ironclad Sisterhood Project has evolved into an incredible collaborative project that is utilised and appreciated by many. We are honoured to be recognised alongside so many wonderful historians in NSW and we would like to congratulate the other award recipients of 2023. We also want to say none of this would have been achieved without the hard work of Jessica Hill who provided the foundation and purpose for pursuing this project. Without her meticulous and detailed entries for every convict women entering NSW between 1788-1818 none of the work we have achieved would be possible. This work would also not be possible without the contribution of many people, as well as the continued support we have received.

Thank you again to the History Council of NSW, and to everyone who has contributed and supported this incredible project. We cannot wait to continue the project in 2024!!!

Hi there!! We have been taking a much needed break

Hi there!! We have been taking a much needed break for the last couple of weeks. It’s officially just over a year since Andrew and Alex started the work for the project. Who would of thought it would become such a big project!!!

We are still working hard on getting some more episodes released for season one. In the meantime these are some book recommendations from the team that have influenced their research. We highly recommend if you haven’t already, taking some time to read one or two of these books.

The biographies of the convict women are integral

The biographies of the convict women are integral to every episode. In this video Christina is demonstrating the methods and resources she uses to research the lives of these women alongside using Jess’ notes and what she was able to discover. We recommend following Christina’s example if you would like to search any of the women in the database.

Our new episode is now live wherever you listen to your podcasts. This is a very interesting episode, delving into some of the crimes women were found guilty of and transported to Australia for. We really enjoyed making this episode, as we all learnt some very interesting things. The biographies from this weeks episode are exciting and we learn about an aspect of one of the women’s lives from a letter she wrote.
